Today I released Basil from his watery prison and moved him to his new home. Basil's day didn't end there, oh no, Basil was also seeded today and I suppose today really is his beginning. Seeding Basil was a little bit of an adventure as the seeds are very sticky.
The box shows someone spreading the seeds on by hand, but after their confused instructions I figured I'd try something different. I decided to use popsicle sticks to spread the seeds as the mixture was thick and sticky like glue.
I used the skinny stick at first, but after the top layer was removed the seeds became too watery and thin to use that size and I switched to the larger stick. Both sticks worked fairly well and saved me the trouble of getting the seeds all over.
This is Basil after he was seeded. I wanted a thin layer, which I mostly achieved. There are some areas that look more saturated than others, but when I tried to get in there and move things around it made matters worse. Basil is currently resting by the window with a plastic bag covering him, the box suggests keeping him moist and with the heat on I didn't want him to dehydrate. I'm starting to wonder if beginning Basil's journey in a blizzard was a good idea or not. Oh well, I guess only time will tell if Basil is successful or not.
