Day 02: Seeding and MORE

Today I  released Basil from his watery prison and moved him to his new home. Basil's day didn't end there, oh no, Basil was also seeded today and I suppose today really is his beginning. Seeding Basil was a little bit of an adventure as the seeds are very sticky.
The box shows someone spreading the seeds on by hand, but after their confused instructions I figured I'd try something different. I decided to use popsicle sticks to spread the seeds as the mixture was thick and sticky like glue.
I used the skinny stick at first, but after the top layer was removed the seeds became too watery and thin to use that size and I switched to the larger stick. Both sticks worked fairly well and saved me the trouble of getting the seeds all over.
This is Basil after he was seeded. I wanted a thin layer, which I mostly achieved. There are some areas that look more saturated than others, but when I tried to get in there and move things around it made matters worse. Basil is currently resting by the window with a plastic bag covering him, the box suggests keeping him moist and with the heat on I didn't want him to dehydrate. I'm starting to wonder if beginning Basil's journey in a blizzard was a good idea or not. Oh well, I guess only time will tell if Basil is successful or not.

Day 01: The Beginning

Oh happy day! Today, I received my very first Chia pet. I could not wait to get to meet my new elephant friend, I named him Basil. I could not contain my excitement and quickly unpacked Basil.

Before beginning I read the instructions carefully — an elephant is for life, not just for Christmas. Despite the self explanatory nature of Chia pets, reading the instructions turned out to be quite challenging.
The Side of the box says to soak Basil overnight. Ok fine.
The instructions in the box say to soak Basil and seeds for 1 hour. Um...that's not overnight.
The seed packet says to soak seeds 10 minutes.

After doing some serious Googling, I decide to soak both Basil and the seeds overnight. The clay is bisqued and needs more time to absorb water, I have no idea about the seeds but overnight seems legit. We're off to a great start!
This is the box picture of Basil.

This actually is Basil. He's slightly more green than the box would have you believe, but I'm perfectly ok with that and love him anyway.
At approximately 5:15 p.m. on Dec. 25, 2010, Basil was placed into the water to soak overnight.
The seeds were placed in a separate cup to soak as well.

Tomorrow I will place the seeds on Basil and he will be placed in the drip tray and move into his permanent location. The box says 3-5 days for sprouts, and around 2-3 weeks for full growth. Of course, if the instructions are anything to go by it could take 1 hour, or merely 10 minutes.

Goodluck, Basil!
